La Mata still keeps the feel of a traditional Spanish village despite the overbuilding surrounding the Torrevieja area. There is a very pleasant plaza next to the sea front with a variety of cafes and restaurants, where you can enjoy eating al fresco. The salt lake of La Mata and the adjoining lake of Torrevieja have protected parkland areas, with a variety of flora and fauna.
La Mata is the location of a popular street market - held every Wednesday, it is open from 8am to 1pm and is a great place to stock up on fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables, and also shoes, handbags and other products. The location of the market is Canal de Acequión.
