Salt Lakes Torrevieja and La Mata
Protected Wetlands - Costa Blanca south

The lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja are made up a wetland of special interest for their botanical value and landscape of undoubted beauty as well as the socio-economic aspect. Inside the park the salt lakes are still working and are among the most important in Europe.

More than a hundred species of birds live alongside some amphibians and many reptiles in the park that is made up of two lagoons separated by a strip of land.
There is also a variety of vegetation around the lagoons, resulting mainly by the salinity of the soil and the uses made of the land.

The importance of the Torrevieja and La Mata lagoons can be appreciated by the fact that they constitute 52% of the municipal area. This unique environment is a "must" for all nature lovers.

Visitors to La Mata protected park can take
advantage of a conducted tour, making a nice
change from frying on the beach.
