For nature lovers, there is the protected reserve of the lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja known as Las Salinas, the salt flats which date back to the 12th century and which are the habitat for numerous protected species of bird such as the greater flamingo and Montagu’s harrier. The commercial salt flats also provide the main industry for the town - the mining of salt.

Along the sea front is a permanent market with gifts, ice creams, cloths etc. and further along is the splendid promenade with protected swimming areas and a variety of restaurants, bars and cafés.
