Ancient Sea Port
The first settlement founded in the natural harbour of Cartagena was constructed in 223 BC by the Carthaginians, who called it Quart Hadas (New City). After conquering the city in 209 BC the Romans called it Carthago Nova (New Carthage) Although the city declined in importance in the middle ages, its prestige increased in the 18th century when it became a major naval base.
The city of Cartagena is situated in the south east region of the Autonomous Community of the region of Murcia,
with an approximate population of 195,000 inhabitants; occupying an area of 558.3 km². The Annual average temperature is a mild 20º centigrade with the temperature in the winter very seldom falling below 12º.
The city is now a mixture of the really ancient and modern, narrow streets with interesting little shops, a variety of restaurants and bars side by side with the new wider roads containing supermar
kets, restaurants the university etc.

Also the remains, of castles, Roman villas, and many interesting churches and museums.
Thanks to its strategic location, the Port of Cartagena throughout all of its history has been a good reference for the marine traffic of the Mediterranean, consolidated as one of the most important industrial ports in Europe.
